Let's Look At Our Lives

The Lord is like a father to his children, tender and compassionate to those who fear him. For he knows how weak we are; he remembers we are only dust. Our days on earth are like grass; like wildflowers, we bloom and die. The wind blows, and we are gone--as though we had never been here. - Psalm 103: 13-16 (NLT)

Let us briefly consider Alexander the Great. Widely considered the most successful battle commander in history, Alexander had created one of the largest empires in the ancient world by the age of thirty. During his reign, there was nobody with more power. There was no human more revered and feared. For the time Alexander the Great walked this earth, there was no one above him on earth and he had no peer. And then he died. At age thirty-two. While we still learn about him in history class, his kingdom actually fractured and disintegrated just one generation after he passed away. While we still study his impact on the world it is contained to that 32 year period that he lived. He practically ruled the world and yet he is merely an historical footnote in time. I want us to think about this in relation to our own lives on this planet. God has given us a specific amount of time on this earth. We do not know the length of that time. I am sure Alexander the Great could never have imagined dying at such a young age but in the end"what is man?

Look here, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we are going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit." How do you know what your life will be like tomorrow? Your life is like the morning fog--it's here a little while, then it's gone. What you ought to say is, "If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that." Otherwise you are boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil. - James 4: 13-16 (NLT)

One of the greatest tricks the devil pulls is to convince us that we will always have tomorrow. That we have so much time to take care of what we need to take care of. But as these verses from James reminds us, our life is like a morning fog. It is thick and hangs in the air to give the illusion that it is here to stay but it can be gone in an instant. This is where we find the key verses today taken from the 103 rd Psalm. Beloved this is not an exercise in sadness but rather a call to embrace our life while we have it and get about the work of God before He calls us home.

We are only dust - don't wait for tomorrow to tell people that you love them.

Our days on earth are like grass - we do not have time to play church when there are souls hanging in the balance.

Like wildflowers we bloom and die - stop chasing the wind and the things of this world - get about the Father's business.

The wind blows and we are gone - every day is a gift from God but how many gifts do we refuse to unwrap?

As though we had never been here"just like Alexander the Great. Our works on this earth have no eternal value. You can conquer the world and still be a mere footnote. But every person we bring to the cross will have eternal value that will never die.

The beginning of the key verses remind us of some things to remember as we consider our own mortality. The first of which is to remind us of what our actual relationship is with God. It is not to be friends. It is not to be casual. God is our Father and He treats us as His children. That means He loves us but will also chasten us when we stray from the path He wants us to be on. But God will also be tender and compassionate to us beloved. He isn't a mean old man in the skies waiting to hurl lightning bolts down upon us. But there is a qualifier beloved. The candy coated Jesus that is being preached is not real. God is tender and compassionate to those who fear Him. That does not mean that we cower in a corner over who God is but rather that our understanding of who He is results in obedience to what He has said in His Word.

Beloved, God knows how weak we are. He knows we are but dust because He formed us from the dust. But He has saved those of us who have left this world to follow Him. Those who are in a true relationship with Jesus Christ. He is our Abba Father who loves us but wants us to obey what He has said. He is tender and compassionate towards us if we reverently fear who He is. Don't fall for the false Christ's being preached out there. They cannot save you. They hold no power. They are chasing the wind and like Alexander the Great still teaches us from the pages of history; that wind blows against us quicker than we might ever think. Do not waste today. It is a gift. Unwrap it. Thank God for it. Use it for His glory.
